Nikita Kanda: ‘I was just a child when my abuser locked me in a room’

Nikita Kanda Shares Childhood Trauma of Abuse in Emotional Testimony

Nikita Kanda, 28, reminisces about a dark chapter in her childhood where she was confined to a room, contending with fear and isolation at the hands of a violent abuser. Despite her cheerful and engaging persona on the BBC Asian Network Breakfast Show, Kanda reveals that the haunting memories of the violence she endured still linger within her.

Recalling her ordeal, Kanda discloses, “I was locked away in a little room. As a child, you don’t understand what’s going on, but you know it’s not OK and you know that it’s not normal. I was very angry and confused.” This revelation marks Kanda’s first public acknowledgment of the abuse she encountered, as she lends her voice to The Independent’s Brick by Brick campaign in collaboration with Refuge.

In a bid to construct a safe haven for survivors of domestic abuse, the Brick by Brick initiative has surpassed its initial fundraising goal of £300,000 to establish a refuge. Kanda, still grappling with the repercussions of the violence she experienced in her youth, aspires to shed light on domestic abuse, particularly concerning children who undergo similar trials.

Reflecting on the enduring impact of the violence, Kanda shares, “The violence left me with a lot of issues. I didn’t know who I was, what was right, what was wrong, and I remember just feeling really angry and then emotional and confused.” Despite the harrowing experiences, Kanda draws strength from her close-knit family support system, emphasizing how such adversities can forge resilience and fortitude within an individual.

Through her collaboration with Refuge, Kanda aims to demystify the stigma surrounding domestic abuse and offer hope to those currently ensnared in such situations. She urges survivors to hold onto the belief that there is light at the end of the tunnel, assuring, “You will get out the other end… However bad it seems right now, I promise you in five, 10, 20 years you’ll look back and be like ‘I went through that such a horrific time in my life, but I got through it’.”

Kanda’s narrative serves as a beacon of empowerment and advocacy, underlining the critical importance of destigmatizing domestic abuse and extending a lifeline to those in need. Her courageous testimony exemplifies the resilience and tenacity that can emerge from even the darkest of circumstances.

In summary, Nikita Kanda bravely shares her traumatic childhood experiences of abuse, highlighting the enduring impact it has had on her life. Through her involvement in The Independent’s Brick by Brick campaign with Refuge, Kanda seeks to raise awareness about domestic abuse and support survivors in their journey towards healing and empowerment. Her resilience and determination serve as an inspiration for those grappling with similar challenges, shedding light on the vital importance of breaking the silence surrounding domestic abuse.
