Pregnant Mum Sentenced to Jail for Causing Horrific Crash While Six Times Over Alcohol Limit
A pregnant mother of two has been sentenced to two years in prison for causing a devastating road collision while being six times over the legal alcohol limit. Charlotte Aitken, 37, from Cumbernauld, North Lanarkshire, admitted to causing serious injury and endangering lives by dangerously driving under the influence of alcohol.
The incident occurred on February 28 last year in Cumbernauld when Aitken’s Audi swerved onto the wrong side of the road, colliding head-on with a Hyundai carrying a family of four. The impact of the crash left the family members injured, with three of them sustaining serious injuries. Fortunately, no fatalities were reported, but the consequences were severe.
During the court proceedings at Airdrie Sheriff Court, it was revealed that the Hyundai driver, along with her family members, suffered various injuries requiring medical treatment. The unconscious driver had to be freed from the wreckage and underwent surgery for her injuries, while her family members also suffered fractures and required surgical interventions.
A passing motorist who witnessed the collision alerted Aitken by honking and flashing lights, but the impaired driver failed to react in time to avert the collision. A breath test revealed a significantly high level of alcohol in Aitken’s system, far exceeding the legal limit. Following the crash, Aitken showed remorse and took steps to address her alcohol consumption, undergoing a treatment programme.
In his sentencing, Sheriff Paul Haran emphasised the severity of Aitken’s actions, noting the high level of impairment caused by alcohol consumption. Despite recognising Aitken’s efforts to address her issues and her personal circumstances, including her pregnancy, the sheriff deemed a custodial sentence as the only appropriate course of action. Aitken was also banned from driving for seven years and required to retake her driving test.
