Scientists have discovered a new at-home test that could be a key indicator of ageing. According to a new study published in the journal PLoS ONE, the ability to stand on one leg is a more accurate measure of ageing than changes in strength or gait.
Maintaining good balance, muscle strength, and a steady gait are crucial factors in helping individuals stay independent as they grow older. Unintentional falls, often caused by a loss of balance, are a leading cause of injuries in people aged 65 and above.
The study involved 40 healthy individuals over the age of 50, with half of the participants under 65 and the other half aged 65 or older. Participants underwent tests for walking, balance, and knee and grip strength. In the balance tests, they stood on force plates in various scenarios for 30 seconds each, including standing on one leg with eyes open and closed.
The results showed that standing on one leg, particularly the non-dominant leg, exhibited the highest rate of decline with age. Grip strength was found to decline at a faster rate than knee strength, making it a better predictor of ageing. Interestingly, gait parameters did not seem to change significantly with age.
Study senior author Kenton Kaufman highlighted the importance of balance in ageing, stating that poor balance increases the risk of falls regardless of movement. Balance not only relies on muscle strength but also input from vision, inner ear signals, and other sensory organs.
The researchers did not observe any differences in the results between genders, indicating that the decline in balance and gait with age affects both men and women equally. Maintaining balance on one leg emerged as the most reliable determinant of ageing, according to the study.
