Well-known Cambodian investigative journalist released on bail
A well-known Cambodian investigative journalist who had been charged with a criminal offense for exposing online scams and corruption has been released on bail. Mech Dara, a freelance journalist, expressed his gratitude to all those who supported him during his time at Kandal Provincial Prison complex, south of the capital Phnom Penh. He mentioned that he still faces the legal battle ahead but did not disclose his plans regarding resuming work as an investigative journalist.
Reportedly, Mech Dara was released at the request of his lawyer in the Phnom Penh Municipal Court. Prior to his release, Mech Dara appeared in a video broadcasted by a government-affiliated media outlet, Fresh News, dressed in an orange prison uniform, apologising to the Prime Minister Hun Manet and former Prime Minister Hun Sen for posting false information in the past. The charge against him, incitement to commit a felony or cause social disorder, carries a possible sentence of six months to two years in prison.
His arrest on Sept. 30 had sparked condemnation from fellow journalists, both locally and internationally. Various media organisations and civil society groups called for his immediate release and an end to harassment against journalists. The U.S. State Department also expressed deep concern over his arrest, mentioning his recognition with the Trafficking in Persons Report Hero award for his commendable work.
