Xander Schauffele has referred to himself as ‘an idiot’ following his recovery attempts during the Zozo Championship. The Open champion and winner of the US PGA Championship found himself in a challenging situation during the tournament, resulting in a quadruple bogey on his scorecard.
During the opening round at Narashino Country Club, Schauffele encountered difficulty on the par-four ninth hole when his tee shot landed in what appeared to be an unplayable lie near the base of a tree. Despite the challenging position, the world number two made two unsuccessful attempts to pitch the ball back to the fairway before ultimately accepting defeat and taking a penalty drop. It took him six shots to reach the green and he finished the hole with a double bogey.
Reflecting on his performance, Schauffele shared, “For me to think I can do anything definitely got me in a hole there. I should have just taken an unplayable, but I was an idiot and tried to hit it. Then I was stubborn and then tried to hit it again, then finally took an unplayable.” He acknowledged the need to reassess his approach in similar situations in the future.
Despite this setback, compatriot Taylor Moore took the lead in the tournament with an impressive seven-under-par score. American players Max Greyserman, Eric Cole, along with Colombia’s Nico Echavarria, also put up strong performances to stay near the top of the leaderboard. Notable names like former world number one Justin Thomas and defending champion Collin Morikawa also made solid starts in the competition.
As the Zozo Championship continues, Schauffele’s determination to learn from his mistakes and improve his decision-making in challenging scenarios will be closely watched by fans and fellow competitors alike.
