Authorities in Bosnia have labelled an attack on a police station by a teenager as an act of terrorism. The incident, which resulted in the death of one officer and the injury of another, took place in Bosanska Krupa in northwest Bosnia.
The attack occurred at around 9 p.m. on Thursday when a teenager born in 2009 entered the local police station and carried out a “totally unprovoked” assault on the officers, according to police reports. The motive behind the attack is currently under investigation by prosecutors, who have classified it as a terrorist act. The injured officer is receiving medical treatment and is reported to be in a stable condition.
Chief Prosecutor Merima Mesanovic stated, “Unofficially, the motive is an attack on the institution, i.e. the police station as an authority with the aim of intimidating the population.” She further mentioned that they are looking into whether the assailant acted alone or if there were any extremist groups involved in inciting the attack.
Local police chief Adnan Habibija expressed astonishment that a 14-year-old would carry out such an audacious attack on a police station. He highlighted the alarming nature of the incident and called for reflection on the societal implications.
Due to the suspect being a minor, authorities have refrained from releasing more details about the case. Security measures have been heightened in the area following the assault. Bosanska Krupa, where the attack took place, is located approximately 200 kilometers northwest of the capital city of Sarajevo.
