Israeli Strike Kills 38 in Gaza and Three Journalists in Southern Lebanon
An Israeli strike has resulted in the deaths of 38 people in Khan Younis, according to Gaza’s health ministry. This attack marks a continuation of Israel’s military offensives in Gaza and Lebanon despite international calls for a ceasefire and increased humanitarian aid access to the Gaza Strip, particularly in its northern region.
The fatalities reported by Gaza health officials occurred in Khan Younis, where residents have been seen lining up for essentials like bread outside the only operational bakery in the city. These deaths come following United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken’s statement that Israel had effectively dismantled Hamas and urged both sides to return to negotiations. Blinken also called for diplomatic efforts to resolve the conflict in Lebanon.
In a separate incident on the same day, an Israeli airstrike targeted guesthouses in southeast Lebanon where journalists were staying, killing three reporters. This attack occurred amidst ongoing exchange of fire between Hezbollah and Israel along the Lebanon-Israel border, which escalated after Israel’s response to Hamas’ attack on Israel in October.
The journalists killed in Lebanon were identified as Ghassan Najjar, Mohamed Reda, and Wissam Qassem, who were working for media outlets including Al-Mayadeen and Al-Manar. Several others were injured in the strike, with Lebanese authorities condemning the incident as a war crime.
Since early October 2023, 11 journalists have been killed and eight wounded in the conflict along the Lebanon-Israel border. The targeting of journalists has raised concerns about press freedom and safety, with Israel denying allegations of deliberately attacking media personnel.
US Secretary of State Blinken emphasised the urgent need for a diplomatic resolution to ensure security along the Israel-Lebanon border. Meanwhile, the World Health Organisation highlighted the humanitarian crisis in Gaza, where 2,500 Palestinian children urgently require medical evacuation. Efforts are being made to address the health needs of vulnerable populations affected by the ongoing conflict.
