Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the owner of Manchester United and Britain’s richest industrialist, has injected £591m (€710m) into his car manufacturing project, Ineos Automotive, in the past year to ramp up production. This significant investment has brought the total debt of Ineos Automotive to Sir Jim’s chemical empire to €2.43bn, following an additional €710m borrowing.
In the 2023 financial year, Ineos Automotive recorded a loss of €431m, showing a slight improvement from the previous year. Despite this, the company faced challenges such as supply chain disruptions that led to the temporary closure of its factory in France. The company’s initial sales began in 2022, marking a milestone for the company founded in 2018 by Sir Jim Ratcliffe with the aim of producing a successor to the Land Rover Defender.
Alongside the Grenadier offroader, Ineos Automotive has also introduced the Quartermaster pickup version and is working on an electric variant named the Fusilier, set to be available from 2028. Initially planning to manufacture the vehicles in Bridgend, Wales, Sir Jim Ratcliffe seized the opportunity to use a pre-existing car factory in Hambach, France, for easier access to a skilled workforce and suppliers on the continent.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s wealth, estimated at £23.5bn, places him as the fourth-richest person in Britain according to the Sunday Times rich list. He built his fortune in the chemicals industry, acquiring underperforming plants and expanding his business into various sectors. In addition to Ineos and Manchester United, he owns other sports teams and businesses, including a stake in a French Ligue 1 team and a Swiss football club.
However, recent decisions, such as the closure of the Grangemouth oil refinery in Scotland, have sparked debates due to the loss of 400 jobs. The closure was announced as part of a strategy to transform the refinery into a fuel import terminal due to its inability to compete with newer, more cost-effective facilities in other regions such as the Middle East and Asia.
In conclusion, Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s significant investment in Ineos Automotive reflects his commitment to innovation and expansion in the automotive industry. Despite facing challenges, his strategic decisions and diverse business portfolio continue to solidify his position as a prominent figure in both the business and sports sectors.
