McLaren is taking action by requesting a review following Lando Norris’ penalty at the US Grand Prix, as reported by The Independent. During the recent race in Austin, Norris received a five-second penalty for passing Max Verstappen, with both drivers going off the track. McLaren argued that Verstappen had forced Norris wide. As a result, Verstappen finished ahead of Norris and increased his title lead. McLaren has requested a hearing in Mexico to present new evidence that was not available to the stewards at the time of their decision.
Formula One operates with different stewarding panels at each race, a system that is not full-time or professional. George Russell, a director of the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association, advocates for F1 to adopt consistent full-time stewards, following the lead of other global sports. Russell believes that having the same stewards at every race would bring about much-needed consistency to decision-making.
Russell also expressed his belief that Verstappen should have been penalised for going off the track, suggesting that the Dutch driver is exploiting loopholes to his advantage.
