Moniaive’s Kate Howard’s Journey of Music and Community in Galloway
Kate Howard, a resident of Moniaive, continues to weave her story of friendship, music, and community engagement in Galloway. Kate’s musical journey began in her childhood, where she discovered a deep love for singing and playing the piano. Hailing from Merseyside, the 55-year-old Kate’s life took her to various places like the US, Yorkshire Dales, and Devon before settling in Moniaive in 2013. Her connection to Galloway was further solidified through her frequent musical retreats at Laurieston Hall near Castle Douglas, where she shared her passion for music with others.
Having survived breast cancer, Kate embraces life with unmatched energy and enthusiasm. She works as a peripatetic music teacher in Dumfries and Galloway, bringing Gaelic and Scots songs to nurseries and primary schools. Kate leads three choirs – Cairn Chorus in Moniaive, Songwave in Castle Douglas, and CatStrand Singers in New Galloway. The CatStrand Singers, founded by the late Nicola Black, entrusted Kate to continue her legacy, showcasing the power of music to unite and heal.
Kate also founded Songwave in Castle Douglas, attracting new members and garnering success with performances and concerts. Her dedication extends to Moffat, where she initiates the Dark Sky Singers, amplifying the choral message in upper Annandale. Alongside her musical pursuits, Kate’s home reflects her love for animals, with a diverse group of rescues adding joy and laughter to her life.
Kate’s commitment to music education faced a setback when funding cuts halted her full-time teaching role. Despite this, Kate’s unwavering dedication to music and community shines through her various choral projects and performances. Her involvement in initiatives like MOOL choir’s Moving Stories and the revival of Galloway Gaelic through Oran Bagraigh showcases her passion for preserving cultural heritage through music.
Reflecting on her journey, Kate emphasises the importance of community engagement and cultural integration in Galloway. While she appreciates the diversity newcomers bring, she acknowledges the need for mutual respect and understanding to maintain the area’s unique identity and address underlying social issues.
