A renowned dietitian, Professor Tim Spector from King’s College London, and co-founder of the Zoe health app, has shed light on the benefits of incorporating oats into our daily diet. Spector highlighted that oats are considered a ‘superfood’ due to their potential to lower blood pressure, improve sugar control, and reduce cholesterol levels. In a recent Instagram post, he addressed common questions about the health benefits of oats, stating that their effectiveness depends on individual responses to sugars and the type of oats chosen.
Spector differentiated between various types of oats, mentioning the highly processed ‘instant’ oats and the more fibre-rich bran or whole rolled oats, which have a more significant impact on the body. Studies have demonstrated that consuming a substantial amount of oats can lead to a decrease in blood cholesterol levels, attributed to the presence of beta-glucan, a compound that lines the intestines and slows the absorption of fats into the bloodstream.
The professor recommended opting for high-fibre oat options like oat bran or whole rolled oats for better gut health and cautioned against the quicker absorption of less-fibre instant oats, which can cause a spike in blood sugar levels. Additionally, Spector advised adding fats, fibre, and protein to oats through toppings like Greek yogurt and seeds to mitigate blood sugar spikes. He highlighted that the type of oats chosen, such as organic oats, can also impact their health benefits, as studies have found varying levels of glyphosate in oats.
Health expert Dr. Michael Mosley also emphasised the advantages of consuming oats, noting on his BBC podcast, Just One Thing, that increasing whole grain intake, including oats, can aid weight loss, particularly in the abdominal region. Mosley highlighted the health benefits of whole grains, rich in fibre, antioxidants, polyphenols, protein, and fat. Consuming three servings of whole grains per day has been linked to a lower body mass index, attributed to the fibre content that promotes a feeling of fullness and regulates digestion, leading to reduced chronic inflammation and belly fat.
In summary, incorporating oats, especially high-fibre options, into a regular diet can offer various health benefits, including lowering cholesterol levels, improving gut health, aiding weight loss, and reducing the risk of chronic diseases like Type 2 diabetes. Choosing the right type of oats and adding nutritious toppings can enhance their impact on overall health and well-being. Health experts recommend organic oats and whole grains as part of a balanced diet for optimal health outcomes.
