Thousands of children from East Kilbride have embarked on an exciting initiative called Beat the Street, where they walk, cycle, and scoot their way through the town in a quest to accumulate points. The massive active travel game has captured the enthusiasm of the community, with St. Kenneth’s Primary School currently leading the total points leaderboard, followed by Crosshouse Primary School and Our Lady of Lourdes in second and third place respectively.
As the game nears its end on Wednesday, October 30, participants are in a frenzy to collect double points from every Beat Box during the Go Celebrate week. Almost 13,000 individuals have registered for the event and collectively have covered over 100,000 miles by walking, cycling, running, and scooting – a distance equivalent to circling the equator four times or nearly reaching halfway to the moon.
Beat the Street aims to promote active travel as the preferred choice for everyday journeys, fostering mental and physical well-being, increased physical activity, improved air quality, and reduced congestion. The initiative not only encourages movement but also strengthens community ties and connections to green spaces, promoting overall resilience and well-being.
Delivered by Intelligent Health on behalf of South Lanarkshire Council, Beat the Street East Kilbride is supported by South Lanarkshire Leisure and Culture and funded by Strathclyde Partnership for Transport. Councillor Robert Brown, Chair of South Lanarkshire Council’s Community and Enterprise Resources Committee, expressed delight in witnessing the community’s active participation in the competition as it nears its conclusion.

As the initiative draws to a close, the anticipation is high for the winners to be announced, bringing the town together in a spirit of fun and healthy competition.
