The United Kingdom has fewer nurses per capita compared to its European neighbours, as highlighted by a recent analysis commissioned by the SNP. Research from the House of Commons library revealed that the UK has been falling behind its European counterparts since the early 2000s. Specifically, Scotland has been identified as trailing many other countries in north-west Europe when it comes to the number of nurses available.
In 2022, the UK had less than nine practising nurses per 1,000 people. England reported just under seven nurses per 1,000 people, whereas Scotland had nearly 12 nurses per 1,000. Interestingly, every other country in north-west Europe boasted a higher nurse-to-population ratio than the UK as a whole. Scotland’s numbers were also below countries like Switzerland, Finland, Norway, Iceland, the Republic of Ireland, and Germany.
The SNP has urged the UK Government to allocate more funds towards healthcare in the upcoming Budget to recruit additional nurses. Scotland specifically had 11.9 nurses per 1,000 people, compared to Switzerland with 18.5, Finland with 18.9, Norway with 15.6, Iceland with 14.9, and the Republic of Ireland with 13.3 nurses per 1,000 people.
The call for increased healthcare spending is pressing, especially considering the fact that the UK only had one practicing nurse for every 116 individuals. The SNP has proposed an additional £16 billion investment in the NHS to address the chronic underfunding and understaffing issues plaguing public healthcare.
Seamus Logan, the SNP’s Westminster Health spokesperson, emphasized the detrimental impact of austerity cuts and insufficient funding on the NHS in Scotland and across the UK. The need for a substantial increase in healthcare funding has never been more urgent, especially in light of the challenges posed by years of austerity cuts and Brexit.
The SNP’s advocacy for bolstering NHS funding serves as a vital push towards ensuring adequate healthcare provision and staffing levels. As the UK Government faces mounting pressure to address the nurse shortage issue, the forthcoming Budget announcement will be closely watched to see if substantial steps are taken to address this critical healthcare concern.
