Fortunately, Mercedes later confirmed that Russell had been released from the medical centre and was in good condition.
Meanwhile, championship leader Max Verstappen faced his own set of challenges as he encountered engine issues during practice in Mexico City. Verstappen, who leads the title standings by 57 points over Lando Norris, had complained of engine problems during the first practice session. Although Red Bull initially believed the issue to be minor, Verstappen continued to experience difficulties during the second practice session. He reported abnormal noises over the team radio and was forced to return to the pits without posting a timed lap. If Verstappen needs to change his power unit before the end of the season, he could face a grid penalty.
In another dramatic moment during Friday’s practice, Alex Albon and Oliver Bearman were involved in a high-speed collision. Albon, driving for Williams, collided with Bearman, the British teenager driving for Ferrari, as the latter slowed down on the track. Albon labelled Bearman an “idiot” over the team radio following the incident. Luckily, both drivers emerged unscathed from the crash.
The practice sessions in Mexico also saw strong performances from Carlos Sainz, Oscar Piastri, and Yuki Tsunoda.
