Parents cite rising energy bills as reason for skipping half-term holidays
As the upcoming half term approaches, nearly half of parents have revealed that they will not be planning a family holiday this season due to escalating energy costs and apprehensions surrounding the impending Budget. A survey conducted by direct debit travel card company Currensea found that 47 percent of parents have had to put a hold on their travel plans in the coming months due to the surge in energy expenses.
The study, which involved 2,000 UK adults intending to travel abroad within the next six months or with school-age children, also highlighted that financial worries ahead of the autumn Budget have led 45 percent of parents to forgo booking a year-end holiday. Additionally, approximately 20 percent of parents believe that the fines for travelling during term time are justifiable given the savings from booking outside of school holidays, with one in five British families expressing that half-term getaways are currently beyond their financial means.
James Lynn, the CEO of Currensea, commented on the situation, stating, “Families are having to stretch finances further than ever and make tough decisions when it comes to holidays. Even those who were previously comfortable financially are being impacted. So it’s not surprising that some are willing to risk fines by taking their children out of school during term time.”
According to the British fintech brand, additional financial losses for families while travelling arise from exchanging currency at the airport, overseas ATM charges, and using prepaid cards. The research also revealed that over 50 percent of parents are unaware of the fees incurred when using their bank cards overseas.
Mr. Lynn emphasized, “The data shows that busy parents are far more likely to leave exchanging cash until the last minute and therefore get slapped with extortionate fees. In the current economic climate, it’s crucial for families to ensure they’re getting the best value for money when booking a holiday, including cutting out unnecessary foreign exchange fees and avoiding costly mistakes like exchanging money at the airport.”
