Marie Johnston from Harthill, an aunt who has been battling the effects of cancer and its treatments for five years, has recently been recognised for her resilience and positivity with the Wishaw Press’ Say it with Flowers Award. Nominated by her niece Julie Gilmour, Marie’s strength and determination to face life’s challenges head-on, including a recent broken thigh, are truly remarkable. Despite living with secondary breast cancer and undergoing target treatment, Marie continues to embrace life to the fullest.
Julie, deeply inspired by her aunt’s courage, shared, “My Auntie Marie has been fighting secondary breast cancer for roughly five years now. Although there is no cure, she has been receiving target treatment which is helping to manage the cancer so she can live a semi-normal life.” Julie went on to describe the incident that led to Marie breaking her femur bone, highlighting the impact of cancer treatment on her bone strength. However, Marie’s spirit remains unbroken as she focuses on her recovery, now even using her gran’s electric scooter to get around.
