CCTV footage has captured a man fly-tipping three times within just 89 minutes, resulting in a hefty fine of £2,600. The incident occurred in County Durham Council where a neighbourhood warden found soil dumped in a rural area at Bank Foot. Upon reviewing the CCTV footage, it revealed a vehicle entering the site thrice between 11.10am and 12.39pm on the same day.
The footage showed the man, later identified as Jonathon Mackenzie, depositing three loads of soil within the span of the recorded time. Mackenzie admitted to dumping the waste with the intention of later fencing off the area and removing the waste, which he failed to do. Subsequently, Mackenzie pleaded guilty to three charges of depositing controlled waste without a license and was fined a total of £2,620.
In a separate incident, a woman named Kimberley Jane Ellis was found to be linked to two cases of waste dumping at a residential property. Despite legal notices and opportunities to explain her actions, Ellis failed to attend interviews or respond to correspondence. Eventually, Ellis pleaded guilty to two charges in court and was fined £651.20.
Ian Hoult, Durham County Council’s neighbourhood protection manager, emphasised the importance of legal waste disposal to protect the environment. He highlighted that both Mackenzie and Ellis faced criminal convictions and financial penalties as a result of their actions, hoping that their cases will serve as a deterrent to others engaging in environmental offences.
