Scotland’s Rural College Achieves Milestone in Education Provision
The prestigious Scotland’s Rural College (SRUC), which encompasses the Barony Campus situated at Parkgate near Dumfries, has reached a significant milestone by obtaining Taught Degree Awarding Powers. This achievement allows SRUC to confer degrees for the first time, marking a historic moment for the institution.
Over the years, SRUC has demonstrated unwavering dedication and hard work from both its staff and students, culminating in becoming the first Scottish educational provider in nearly two decades to be granted degree-awarding powers. Previously, SRUC’s degrees were awarded through the Universities of Glasgow and Edinburgh. Still, with the Taught Degree Awarding Powers (TDAP) now in place, SRUC can independently award taught higher education qualifications, including degrees and taught Masters.
The Privy Council conferred the TDAP, which was later approved by the Scottish Parliament, empowering SRUC to grant degrees through its own authority. As a result, SRUC’s first degree course will be a BVSci in Veterinary Science, with the inaugural cohort starting at the new School of Veterinary Medicine in Aberdeen.
