British public values trusted journalism more than ever, new study reveals

A recent study has found that the British public places a high value on trusted journalism like never before. The Journalism Matters campaign conducted a survey of 2,000 individuals, revealing that 76% of respondents believe that the role of journalism is more crucial today than ever. This sentiment is attributed to concerns about the spread of fake news and misinformation, a powerful government lacking opposition, and a push for devolution transferring powers to different regions.

According to the OnePoll survey, 71% of participants pointed to social media as the main source of fake news and misinformation, which they believe directly impacts the political landscape in the UK. The study also indicated that nearly eight out of 10 individuals feel that tech firms should face heavy fines for allowing fake news on their platforms. Additionally, 60% of those surveyed think advertisers should cease or significantly reduce their funding if these companies continue to enable misinformation.

Jo Allan, CEO of Newsworks, expressed optimism at the public’s understanding and appreciation of journalism’s vital role in society. She highlighted that trusted journalism plays a critical role in holding those in power accountable, especially amidst the prevalence of fake news and misinformation.

The survey further revealed that 64% of respondents consider the role of trusted journalism in scrutinising the government more important following the Labour Party’s significant victory in the recent general election. Additionally, 66% of participants believe that local news media will become increasingly important in representing communities as the government pursues a devolution agenda.

As the debate around AI and intellectual property rights continues, the survey found that 60% of respondents feel that AI firms and tech giants should not be allowed to use copyrighted works, such as journalism, without clear permission. NMA chief executive Owen Meredith emphasised the importance of protecting journalism amidst various challenges to democratic values.

Overall, the study underscores the growing significance of reliable journalism in today’s society, particularly in holding power to account and combatting the spread of misinformation.

In conclusion, the findings of the study highlight a growing recognition among the British public of the crucial role that trusted journalism plays in society. With concerns about fake news, misinformation, and the need for accountability in government, there is a clear demand for responsible and reliable reporting. This reaffirms the importance of upholding journalistic integrity and ethics in an era where information dissemination is increasingly complex and nuanced.
