Contemporary Art Exhibition Arrives in Castle Douglas in a Unique Way
An innovative contemporary art gallery exhibition made its way to Castle Douglas on Tuesday, but with a twist – it arrived in a bus. The travelling show, stationed at the Crannog in Lochside Park, was made possible through a collaboration between the Castle Douglas Development Forum and The Stove in Dumfries. This Edinburgh-based mobile display space travels to various communities across Scotland, offering a gallery space for artworks and film screenings.
One of the highlights of the exhibition was a film created in partnership with residents in Strathearn, Perthshire, for the Remembering Together project, which aims to capture post-pandemic experiences across Scotland. Carolyn Yates, the chairperson of CDDF, expressed delight at hosting the travelling exhibition as part of the What We Do Now project. She highlighted the Crannog’s transformation into a community and cultural space, paving the way for more cultural events and exhibitions in the future.
Coinciding with the bus’s arrival was a local history photography exhibition showcasing ambitious renovation plans for the Crannog. Amanda Burney, the CDDF community engagement and Crannog facility manager, engaged with visitors to discuss the ongoing redevelopment project. The film presented at the exhibition, created by Strathearn-based artist Helen McCrorie, was a collaborative effort involving individuals of all ages, including care home residents, reflecting on their pandemic experiences and sources of resilience. The soundtrack featured a unique rendition of the song ‘Strathearn’ by Lady Nairne, adding a historical and cultural dimension to the exhibition.
Following its stop in Castle Douglas, the Travelling Gallery headed to Eastriggs and continues its journey with a visit to Annan. The exhibition’s innovative approach to bringing art to local communities has left a lasting impact on Castle Douglas residents, fostering creativity and cultural exchange.
