Killings in Scotland have shown an increase over the past year, as per the latest official statistics on homicides. The data reveals a 10% rise in deaths in the 2023-24 period, with a total of 57 homicide victims, reflecting an increase from the 52 victims reported in 2022-23. Among the victims, the most common method of death was through knife and sharp weapon attacks, accounting for 49% of cases, with 28 out of the 57 victims falling prey to this form of violence. The report also highlights that out of the 44 male victims, 64% were killed by individuals known to them, while incidents of women being killed by ex-partners or partners were notably higher.
According to the figures released by Scotland’s Chief Statistician in the ‘Homicide in Scotland, 2023-24’ report, homicides have shown a decrease over the past decade. A comparison between the years 2014-15, with 63 homicides, and 2023-24, with 57 homicides, indicates a drop of 10% over the two periods. The significant decline is even more pronounced when viewed from a broader perspective, with only 57 homicides reported in 2024 compared to 137 in 2004-2005, marking a substantial 58% reduction in the past 20 years.
The data also sheds light on the demographic trends regarding homicide victims, showing a noteworthy decrease in victims aged between 16 and 24 over the last two decades. While between 2004-05 and 2008-09, there were 125 victims in this age group, the number decreased to 29 in the latest five-year period from 2019-20 to 2023-24. Among the 2023-24 victims, 77% were male and 23% were female, with 85 individuals being accused of homicide during the same period, with the cases associated with all 57 victims being resolved.
Justice Secretary Angela Constance acknowledged the efforts in maintaining low homicide rates but expressed concern over even a single life lost to such violence. The Scottish Government’s commitment to tackling violent crime was reiterated, with investments in violence prevention initiatives and police recruitment aimed at ensuring community safety.
