Late Night Train Sex Pest Banned from Contact with under 18s
A recent incident on a late-night train has led to Mark Farrelly, a 55-year-old from Coatbridge, being placed on the sex offenders’ register for three years. Farrelly has been banned from having any contact with individuals under the age of 18 after making inappropriate advances towards youths on separate occasions during train journeys.
The first incident occurred when Farrelly made unwelcome advances towards a teenage girl on a train from Motherwell to Coatbridge last year. Witnesses reported that Farrelly appeared intoxicated and demanded a kiss from the girl, making her feel uncomfortable by repeatedly touching her chest area. Despite the girl’s refusal, Farrelly persisted until the girls walked away, leaving him to exit the train at Whifflet, shouting obscenities.
A few weeks later, Farrelly engaged in similar behaviour towards a male in his late teens on the same train route. Once again, he made inappropriate sexual comments, causing distress and discomfort to the young passenger. Prosecutors highlighted the distress and alarm caused to the youths by Farrelly’s actions.
During his appearance at Airdrie Sheriff Court, Farrelly pleaded guilty to acting in a threatening and abusive manner and making indecent comments. Sheriff Joseph Hughes condemned Farrelly’s behaviour as “significant sexual misbehaviour” and imposed a three-year community payback order as part of his sentencing. The order includes conditions such as addiction counselling, attendance at a sex offender program, and 200 hours of unpaid community work.
Defence lawyer Luke O’Curry acknowledged the inappropriateness of Farrelly’s actions but emphasized that he was not a sexual predator, rather a man who made poor choices while under the influence. O’Curry stated that the encounters were coincidental and that Farrelly’s behaviour was unacceptable.
In addition to the community payback order, Farrelly was also issued with three-year non-harassment orders with regards to the teenagers involved in the incidents.
