Winter Fuel Payment Urged to Prevent Hypothermia Cases in Scotland
Almost 900 people over the age of 50 were taken to hospitals in Scotland for hypothermia treatment last December, shocking statistics have revealed. Campaigners for older adults have called on Chancellor Rachel Reeves to reinstate the Winter Fuel Payment after data obtained from the Scottish Ambulance Service showed the alarming number of cases. Age Scotland, a campaign group, highlighted the concerning trend, noting that the Winter Fuel Payment was still in effect at the time, helping all pensioners.
With the removal of this crucial financial support for hundreds of thousands of older Scots this winter, there are fears that more elderly individuals may be forced to make difficult decisions to manage their energy bills during the colder months. Recent figures have shown that poorer households use 21% less energy than others during cold weather, exposing them to the risks of living in cold and damp homes. Research has identified the sick, disabled, and elderly as among those most vulnerable to dangerously low energy usage.
In December 2023 alone, 897 Scots over 50 were hospitalized due to hypothermia, with cases reported across different health board areas. Age Scotland has highlighted the plight of around 200,000 pensioners in Scotland who are either at or near the poverty line and are set to lose the Winter Fuel Payment. The group is urging Labour to reconsider its decision to means-test the benefit before the upcoming UK budget announcement.
Katherine Crawford, Chief Executive of Age Scotland, stressed the preventable nature of hypothermia and the importance of adequate heating for older people. She raised concerns about older individuals being hesitant or unable to heat their homes sufficiently due to fears of high energy costs, which can lead to a heightened risk of various health issues. Crawford emphasized the need for government focus on preventing illnesses and keeping older adults out of hospitals.
