First Mpox case of new ‘killer’ strain found in UK as urgent warning issued

The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has announced the first case of the potentially fatal strain of the Clade Ib mpox virus in London. The infected individual had recently returned to the UK from a trip to Africa. Upon arrival on October 21, they developed flu-like symptoms more than 24 hours later, followed by a rash on October 24. Seeking medical attention, the person visited the emergency department in London on October 27, where samples were taken for testing.

Health officials isolated the patient at home while awaiting test results, which later confirmed the presence of the Mpox virus strain. Subsequently, the individual was transferred to the Royal Free Hospital for treatment in the high-consequence infectious diseases unit. The UKHSA assured that the risk to the wider UK population from this strain remains low.

The UKHSA is currently tracing fewer than 10 individuals who had close contact with the infected person, all of whom are identified as household contacts. It’s emphasised that Mpox virus transmission typically requires close human contact to spread. Further investigations and contact tracing are ongoing to prevent any potential spread of the virus.
