Rutherglen MSP Welcomes Recent Rise in Real Living Wage
Rutherglen’s MSP has expressed positivity towards the recent increase in the real Living Wage and is advocating for the UK Government to emulate Scotland’s example by becoming an accredited employer. The hourly rate for the real Living Wage has gone up by 60p to £12.60, which took effect on October 23. Meanwhile, in London, the increment is even higher at 70p, raising the hourly rate to £13.85. It is important to note that the real Living Wage is determined based on the cost of living and is distinct from the UK minimum wage, referred to as the National Living Wage. Employers who opt to pay the real Living Wage do so voluntarily, acknowledging the worth of their employees and ensuring they receive fair compensation.
A full-time worker earning the new real Living Wage (outside London) stands to earn £2,262 more annually compared to a worker on the current National Living Wage. Clare Haughey MSP emphasised the Scottish Government’s advocacy for the real Living Wage since being accredited in 2015. In Scotland, any organisations receiving grants from public bodies are mandated by law to pay the real Living Wage. Consequently, Scotland boasts around five times more accredited real Living Wage employers than the rest of the UK, with nearly 90 per cent of workers aged over 18 in Scotland receiving the real Living Wage or higher. However, it is worth mentioning that the UK Government is not presently an accredited employer for the real Living Wage.
Clare Haughey, who has been a real Living Wage employer since her election in 2016, commented on the recent increase: “After sky-high increases in the cost of living over the past few years, this will be a welcome boost for workers here in Rutherglen and Cambuslang, and across Scotland.” She highlighted the significant impact of the Scottish Government’s initiatives, making Scotland the region with the highest proportion of workers paid the real Living Wage or above in the UK. Haughey urged the new Labour UK government to align with the SNP Scottish Government’s commitment to workers’ rights by implementing the real Living Wage within its own government.
In summary, the rise in the real Living Wage has been well-received by Rutherglen’s MSP, acknowledging the positive implications for workers in the region and across Scotland. The call for the UK Government to follow suit as an accredited employer resonates with the ongoing efforts to ensure fair compensation and recognition of workers’ contributions.
