The Royal Bank of Scotland has officially announced that their Helensburgh branch is set to close later this month. The closure of the Colquhoun Square branch is scheduled for November 20, following initial plans to shut down in September. This decision comes after a campaign to save the branch temporarily halted the closure earlier this year.
In April, RBS, a part of NatWest Group, initially declared the closure of the branch, prompting local efforts to oppose it, including interventions by MSP Jackie Baillie. However, due to new regulations by the Financial Conduct Authority regarding community cash access, the closure was postponed. An independent review by cash access specialists Link showed that additional cash services in Helensburgh were deemed unnecessary, leading to the ultimate decision to close the branch.
Over recent years, banking services in the town have been diminishing, with Santander closing its Helensburgh branch in 2019 and Bank of Scotland shutting its Kilcreggan branch earlier this year. Even the Bank of Scotland branch in Colquhoun Square has reduced its operating hours, now open from 9 am to 3.30 pm, Monday to Thursday.
