A care home worker in Ayrshire faced sanctions from the industry regulator after a disturbing incident where she made disparaging comments to a resident who had soiled their bed. Fiona Crawford, employed as a care assistant at Atlantic View Care Home Limited in Ayr, was reported to have held up the soiled bedsheet and said, “Look at the state of this. This is your s***e.” The incident occurred around July 2, 2024, leading to the Scottish Social Services Council (SSSC) determining that her actions amounted to misconduct.
The SSSC deemed Crawford’s fitness to practise as “impaired” due to the incident and placed a warning on her registration for 12 months, starting from October 29. The resident involved was identified only as ’AA’ to protect their privacy. In their decision notice to Crawford, the SSSC highlighted the expected standards of social service workers, emphasising kindness, compassion, respect, and maintaining the dignity of individuals in their care.
The report specified that while providing care to the resident, Crawford’s behaviour was unacceptable for an experienced registered social service worker. The SSSC noted that Crawford’s actions undermined the trust and confidence in her as a social service professional. They acknowledged that it was an isolated incident with no previous concerning behaviour patterns from Crawford, and took into account her past cooperation with the investigation.
Despite considering Crawford’s positive history, the SSSC pointed out her lack of meaningful insight, reflection, apology, or regret for her actions. The regulator deemed it necessary to mark the conduct as unacceptable and to uphold the standards expected of a registered social service worker. The SSSC stressed the importance of ensuring the safety and respect of individuals under care, and the need for social service workers to communicate respectfully and maintain professionalism.
