A proud Scotsman recently completed an inspiring feat by running seven marathons in seven days to support his father who was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND). Jeff Dobson, 33, from the Shetland Islands, undertook this remarkable challenge to raise £18,000 for MND Scotland after his father Tony was diagnosed with the devastating condition following their return to Shetland last year. Jeff, along with his wife Jacqueline, a nurse for the NHS, relocated to the islands after spending 14 years in Glasgow.
The journey began for Jeff when his father started experiencing difficulties lifting his toes and quickly deteriorated in health. After numerous appointments and scans, he received the heartbreaking diagnosis of MND in March. Jeff shared his shock at the news, highlighting the rapid progression of the disease and the impact on his dad’s mobility and speech. Despite also battling prostate cancer and living with CROHN’s disease for over three decades, Tony continues to work at the local council housing office, demonstrating immense resilience.
Jeff’s determination to raise funds for MND Scotland led him to embark on the ‘7 in 7’ challenge, covering a total of 100 miles over the course of a week. Commencing with the Great Scottish Run in Glasgow, he went on to complete six half marathons in Shetland. Reflecting on the experience, Jeff expressed his gratitude for the overwhelming support and generosity of donors, emphasising the significance of the funds raised in aiding MND research and support services.
Through his dedication and physical endurance, Jeff not only honoured his father’s strength but also contributed significantly to the ongoing battle against MND. His unwavering commitment to the cause serves as a beacon of hope and inspiration for individuals and families affected by the disease, showcasing the power of compassion and perseverance in the face of adversity.
