Five-year-old Grace Grogan has been left paralysed after experiencing a rare stroke during open-heart surgery. The young girl, who was born with half a heart, underwent her fourth procedure at the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in Glasgow on October 17. However, upon waking up from the surgery, doctors discovered that Grace was paralysed on her right side due to a blood clot in her brain that led to a stroke.
Grace’s parents, Vicky Connal and Ricky Grogan, from Coatbridge, were devastated by the news that their daughter may never be the same again. Surgeons had to perform emergency compression surgery, which involved removing part of Grace’s brain and skull to reduce swelling and prevent another stroke. Despite the dire circumstances, Grace managed to survive the three-hour surgery and has shown some signs of improvement since.
Although Grace still cannot communicate and has limited mobility on her right side, her family remains hopeful for her recovery. They have been by her side throughout her ordeal, offering support and love. A fundraiser has been set up by Grace’s aunt, Eileen Grogan, to assist the family during this challenging time.
Vicky expressed gratitude towards the medical team for their efforts in treating Grace, acknowledging the difficult journey that lies ahead for her daughter and their family. An NHS spokesperson stated that they continue to support Grace and her family through her rehabilitation process, respecting the family’s privacy during this time of struggle.
