South Scotland MSP’s Campaign to Create Champion for Elderly Makes Progress
South Scotland MSP, Colin Smyth, is pushing for the establishment of a dedicated commissioner for Scotland’s older population, mirroring similar roles in Wales and Northern Ireland. Smyth has garnered enough support from fellow MSPs to introduce a bill at Holyrood aimed at instituting this position. The Labour MSP highlighted the detrimental effects of Covid-19 on the elderly, emphasizing issues such as restricted access to loved ones in care homes, changes in social care packages, and increased loneliness. Smyth questioned the absence of a strong advocate specifically focused on upholding the human rights of the elderly during crucial decision-making processes. Comparing with Wales, Northern Ireland, and England where similar commissioners exist or are being advocated for, Smyth stressed the importance of challenging negative stereotypes associated with ageing and recognising the valuable contributions elderly individuals make to society.
