Stirling Thug Imprisoned After Single Punch Attack at Agricultural Show
A thug has been sentenced to jail after a single punch left an agricultural showgoer with a brain injury. Rory Hunter, aged 23, knocked down the man with one blow following an altercation after leaving a nightclub in Stirling city centre. The victim fell onto the road, hitting his head on the pavement. Stirling Sheriff Court was informed that the victim, also 23, had spent the day at the annual Stirling Agricultural Show with a friend before heading to a nightclub and returning to their hotel. The incident occurred when a car, in which Hunter was a passenger, honked at them for being on the road. In response, the victim shouted at the car, resulting in Hunter striking him with a single punch as the car passed by. Passers-by rushed to help the injured man, who was bleeding from his head and face. His friend confronted Hunter while the driver of the car instructed him to get back in before driving off. The victim was rushed to Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, where he underwent emergency surgery for a brain bleed. He spent a week on a ventilator and continues to suffer from short-term memory issues, in addition to a permanent scar and dent on his head from the surgery.
CCTV footage led to the identification of the car, allowing Hunter to be apprehended at his residence later that day. Hunter, a father from Bridge of Allan, had a prior conviction related to an offence involving a knuckleduster. He was sentenced to 32 months in prison for assault to severe injury, permanent impairment, permanent disfigurement, and endangering life.
During the hearing, Hunter’s solicitor described the assault as a “momentary matter” involving a single punch. Sheriff Derek Hamilton labelled the assault as “shocking” after hearing a victim impact statement from the victim’s mother, who detailed the significant impact on her son’s life due to Hunter’s violent actions. Throughout the court proceedings, Hunter cried and sniffled, with his sobs filling the courtroom as he was led away to custody.
