A Scottish pensioner fell victim to a scam where she was conned out of £500 by an online catfish impersonating The Walking Dead actor, Andrew Lincoln. Sheelagh Ennis, 68, had been messaging a Facebook account that she believed belonged to the English actor who has been filming in Glasgow. The scam began on September 20 when Sheelagh started conversing with the account, which had a substantial following of over 2,500 before it was eventually deleted.
After the account posted a picture of Andrew Lincoln at Celtic Park, Sheelagh reached out, expressing her desire to meet him, as she described him as one of her heroes. The catfish informed Sheelagh that Mr. Lincoln’s schedule wouldn’t allow him to attend the game against Falkirk but offered her a chance to book a private meet-and-greet for a fee of $1,500 (£1,154). Despite Sheelagh expressing she couldn’t afford the fee, the scammer offered her a reduced rate of £200, which she accepted, eventually leading to her sending a total of £500 to the scammer.
Messages exchanged between Sheelagh and the scammer showed the scammer posing as Andrew Lincoln assuring her of a meeting and how he was personally trying to resolve issues with the booking and management company. Despite becoming suspicious and requesting a refund via PayPal, Sheelagh was reassured by the scammer, who claimed to cover 80% of the booking costs and expressed trust in her.
Following the disappearance of the Facebook account and the silence of the email account, Sheelagh expressed dismay at falling victim to the scam, highlighting how she and her partner James Shields, both pensioners, couldn’t afford to lose £500. Sheelagh had been directed to pay various amounts via PayPal to different accounts and even engaged with one of the alleged recipients who confirmed being scammed as well.
Although Sheelagh, who has yet to report the incident to the police, is considering taking action, she shared her disappointment at the fraudulent scheme, emphasizing her excitement to meet her supposed idol. The catfish’s attempt to manipulate and exploit Sheelagh’s admiration for Andrew Lincoln left her feeling dismayed and regretful.
