Thug jailed for attacking woman in Motherwell home
A man has been sentenced to prison for assaulting a woman at his residence in Motherwell. Ryan Shields, aged 29, was found guilty of kicking his partner in the face while she was on the floor and also biting her face. Thankfully, the injuries sustained were not severe, as revealed during the hearing at Hamilton Sheriff Court. Shields confessed to the assault and behaving in a threatening manner towards the woman at his Watson Street home on February 4.
According to the prosecution by Rebecca Clark, the incident occurred when Shields, heavily intoxicated, started shouting and swearing at the woman as she tried to leave his flat. In the ensuing struggle, she fell to the ground, leading to Shields kicking and biting her on the face. The woman called emergency services for help, and managed to escape by locking Shields inside the flat.
Defense lawyer Rowan Myles mentioned that his client has mental health issues and is awaiting a report from a psychiatrist. Myles acknowledged Shields’ criminal history, stating that it is filled with instances of violence. The sentencing has been postponed to allow for further reports, and Shields has been remanded in custody. Additionally, a non-harassment order has been issued, mandating Shields to stay away from the victim for two years.
Sheriff Michael Higgins emphasized the seriousness of Shields’ past offences and indicated that a prison sentence was highly likely in this case.
This incident serves as a reminder of the importance of addressing mental health issues and the consequences of violent behaviour towards others. It is crucial for individuals to seek help for their mental health concerns and to avoid resorting to violence in any circumstances. Such incidents highlight the need for awareness and action to prevent and address domestic violence within communities.
In conclusion, the justice system plays a crucial role in holding perpetrators accountable for their actions and ensuring the safety and well-being of victims. It is essential for society to continue working towards creating a safer environment for all individuals, free from violence and abuse.
