A woman in Renfrewshire was left with a fractured jaw and a missing tooth after being attacked by her ex-partner during a night out in Paisley, the Paisley Sheriff Court heard. Emily McLaughlan, 32, pushed her former partner around eight times and pulled her to the ground, causing significant facial injuries. The incident occurred following an argument about their relationship during a birthday night out in July last year.
The court was informed by prosecutor Abbey McKenna that McLaughlan and her ex-partner had been in a relationship for about two years but had ended things a week before the incident. Despite the breakup, they were still in contact and went out together for McLaughlan’s birthday. Both were heavily intoxicated when the altercation took place, resulting in the victim suffering serious injuries.
McLaughlan and the woman engaged in a verbal argument that turned physical as they made their way to a car park, where McLaughlan continued to push and struggle with her ex-partner before she fell to the ground. The victim hit her face on the concrete, leading to the loss of a tooth, broken teeth, gum damage, and a fractured jaw. Paramedics and police were called to the scene, and McLaughlan was arrested.
During police questioning, McLaughlan admitted to causing the injuries but claimed she didn’t mean to hurt the victim. The court was told that the victim required medical treatment for her injuries, including reconstruction surgery and stitches. As a result of the assault, she continues to experience difficulties with speaking and eating due to scarring and damage to her mouth.
McLaughlan, from Yoker, Glasgow, had her sentencing deferred for a criminal justice social work report and a restriction of liberty order assessment. She expressed remorse for her actions and will be returning to court for sentencing in November.
