The Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) is currently reviewing whether to press charges against actor and comedian Russell Brand following allegations of historical sexual abuse. Detectives from the Metropolitan Police have provided an evidence file regarding sex offence accusations against the 49-year-old entertainer. These allegations surfaced after a collaborative investigation by The Sunday Times, The Times, and Channel 4 Dispatches revealed claims from four women who accused Brand of sexual assaults spanning from 2006 to 2013.
Russell Brand has vehemently denied these allegations, asserting that all his sexual relationships were consensual. In response to the evidence file passed to them by the police, a CPS spokesperson stated that any decision to bring charges is made independently based on the evidence and legal criteria. Metropolitan Police Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy, heading the investigation, emphasised their commitment to pursuing investigations into sexual offences regardless of when they are alleged to have occurred.
During the time of the reported offences, Brand was a prominent figure in the media industry, working for BBC Radio 2, Channel 4, and appearing in Hollywood films. Following the investigation by Channel 4’s Dispatches and The Sunday Times in 2023, reports of sexual offences were made by women both in London and across the country, leading to a series of interviews under caution with a man in his 40s, relating to non-recent sexual offences.
Brand, in response to the allegations, released a video online denying the claims, stating that his past relationships were consensual, transparent, and questioning the motives behind the accusations. The CPS has not disclosed when they received the file or when a decision on potential charges will be made, underscoring the complexity and sensitivity of the case.
