Alex Salmond should be allowed to ‘rest in peace’ as fresh allegation of sexual assault surfaces

Former Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond, who passed away last month at the age of 69, is facing a new allegation of sexual assault posthumously. The revelation of this fresh complaint has sparked a wave of emotions, with political allies of Salmond expressing anger and calling for him to be allowed to “rest in peace”.

The complaint of sexual assault was lodged against Salmond just days after his sudden death while he was in North Macedonia for a political event. The late politician was laid to rest in a private funeral service in his hometown of Strichen, Aberdeenshire, following his passing. Police Scotland confirmed the receipt of the complaint, alleging a sexual assault that took place several years ago.

It has been disclosed that a group of women had previously raised concerns to SNP officials in 2022 regarding Salmond’s alleged actions, but no action was taken as he was no longer a member of the party. Salmond had left the SNP in 2018 amidst previous allegations and later went on to establish the Alba Party in 2021.

Amidst these developments, Chris McEleny, the General Secretary of the Alba Party and a close friend of Salmond, has criticised the handling of these allegations. McEleny accused individuals linked to Nicola Sturgeon’s government of orchestrating a campaign to smear and discredit Salmond, stressing the importance of allowing him to be remembered in peace.

Further details emerged about the complaints made by the group of women, including an incident where a female politician alleged she was groped by Salmond at a photoshoot. The SNP stated that disciplinary processes could only be initiated against current party members and is reportedly bracing for additional women to come forward with similar claims.

The unfolding of events following Salmond’s death has reignited discussions around accountability, justice, and due process in cases of sexual misconduct, especially when involving public figures. It also underscores the complexities and sensitivities surrounding accusations made posthumously and how they are navigated both legally and ethically.

There are questions raised about the timing and implications of these allegations surfacing after Salmond’s passing, as well as the broader impact it may have on ongoing conversations around transparency, accountability, and addressing sexual misconduct. The aftermath of these developments may continue to unfold, shaping public discourse and perspectives on how such cases are handled in the future.
