Doctor with stage 4 colon cancer shares key warning signs to watch for

Doctor Raises Awareness on Colon Cancer Warning Signs

A gynaecologist, Dr. Lauren Juyia, who self-diagnosed with stage 4 colon cancer in 2022, shared crucial warning signs that led her to discover the disease. At just 37 years old, the doctor experienced two mild symptoms, initially attributing them to age and a busy lifestyle. Dr. Juyia noted feeling fatigued and a sense of pelvic heaviness, prompting her to investigate further after the latter symptom worsened. An ultrasound revealed abnormal masses near her ovary, ultimately leading to the diagnosis of colon cancer.

Despite the rapid growth of the masses, Dr. Juyia did not exhibit severe symptoms aside from pelvic heaviness and tiredness. Following consultations with multiple doctors, she underwent surgery to remove the masses that had spread to various parts of her abdomen. Subsequently, she embarked on six months of chemotherapy and underwent additional surgery to eliminate an inactive tumour. By April, tests showed no evidence of disease.

Dr. Juyia stressed the importance of being vigilant about early warning signs such as fatigue and pelvic heaviness, especially for younger individuals. She emphasised that these symptoms should not be dismissed and highlighted the significance of seeking medical advice promptly. The doctor’s experience underscores the necessity of raising awareness and advocating for proactive health measures, particularly regarding colon cancer detection.

In light of Dr. Juyia’s journey, her insights serve as a poignant reminder for individuals of all ages to prioritise their health and heed potential warning signs. Her resilience and determination to share her story contribute to empowering others to take charge of their well-being and engage in proactive health practices. By shedding light on her experience, Dr. Juyia inspires hope and underscores the importance of early detection and timely medical intervention in the face of cancer diagnoses.
