Donations Appeal Launched for New Dumfriesshire Sculpture
An appeal has been launched to raise £100,000 for a striking new landmark in Annan, Dumfriesshire. The chosen design for the Public Art Centrepiece project was unveiled to the community during a recent coffee morning, commemorating the loss of two iconic bridges in the town due to heavy flooding three years ago. The project will see Thornhill blacksmith Nate Robinson creating the sculpture, with metal parts from the damaged bridges being incorporated into the artwork.
Organised by Annan The History Group, the fundraising appeal is being hosted online at https://localgiving.org/charity/annan-the-history-town-group. Donations can also be made through BACS to Annan the History Town Group, specifying the reference ‘PAC project’ for contributions towards this specific initiative. The proposed design for the sculpture draws inspiration from the town’s legend of the Kelpie in the River Annan, reflecting both local folklore and history.
Gail McPhillips, the co-development officer for ATHT, expressed the group’s vision for the Public Art Centrepiece project as a symbol of resilience and hope for the town of Annan. Following the devastating floods in 2021 that swept away the footbridges, the project aims to repurpose materials from the bridges alongside new elements to create a unifying piece of public art. With a fundraising target of £100,000, the project invites community involvement, including sharing stories, memories, and fundraising ideas related to Annan’s heritage.
Community efforts, donations, and grants are being mobilised to support the sculpture project. Notably, Annan resident Paul Harrington plans to run the 100k Canalathon from Sowerby Bridge to Manchester and back in March 2025 to contribute to the fundraising efforts.
