East Kilbride railway line is set to undergo a significant upgrade with a closure lasting four months as part of a £140 million electrification project. Beginning at the end of January 2025, Network Rail will be leading the effort to electrify the line, resulting in the temporary closure of the railway for 16 weeks. Engineers will work incessantly to implement major engineering works, including the construction of new stations at East Kilbride and Hairmyres.
This project, backed by the Scottish Government, aims to not only electrify the railway from Glasgow to East Kilbride but also establish new stations and improve service reliability for passengers. During the closure, ScotRail will implement alternate transport plans to facilitate passenger travel. Mark Ilderton, ScotRail service delivery director, highlighted the critical nature of the works in advancing the electrification project. The closure period will see the introduction of a replacement bus service to mitigate disruption for passengers, with the new Hairmyres station expected to open to the public in May 2025. The completion of the electrification project is projected for late 2025.
