North Lanarkshire residents have been alerted to the dangers of discarding single-use vapes as sales of these products have surged by 400 per cent over the last two years, reaching approximately 7.7 million vapes per week in the UK. The warning highlights the fire risks associated with throwing away vapes, which contain lithium-ion batteries that can pose a significant hazard if mishandled. Recent data revealed that more than 700 bin lorry and recycling facility fires in the UK during 2023 were attributed to the improper disposal of batteries.
As part of efforts to address this issue, retailers selling vapes are now required by law to offer a free take-back service since January. In North Lanarkshire alone, there are 322 registered premises selling nicotine vaping products (NVPs), with only 23.7% of them implementing a vape take-back scheme based on a survey conducted by the Trading Standards Team of North Lanarkshire Council. To tackle this issue, the council is collaborating with the UK government’s Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) to ensure convenient recycling facilities are accessible at local retailers.
The focus is on verifying that retailers comply with legal obligations regarding age-restricted product sales and now include an inspection for the provision of a vape take-back system. Supermarkets currently offer recycling facilities, and efforts are being made to expand these facilities to filling stations and various retail outlets to enhance compliance among retailers. Councillor Helen Loughran, Convener of the council’s Environment and Climate Change Committee, emphasised the importance of responsible vape disposal to mitigate environmental damage and fire risks.
Residents are urged to recycle vapes properly to safeguard the environment and prevent potential hazards. Through collaborative efforts between local authorities, retailers, and regulatory bodies, the aim is to streamline the process of disposing of vapes safely and in an environmentally friendly manner.
