Dumfriesshire Academic Honoured with Prestigious Fellowship
Dumfries-born Professor Mark Allison has been awarded an Honorary Fellowship by The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, much to his delight. The distinguished chartered accountant, son of Colin and Mhari Allison, was raised in Loch Road and Terregles, and completed his education at St Joseph’s College. His late father, a partner in the well-known Dumfries veterinary practice Allison, Murchie and Dickson, instilled in him a passion for academic excellence.
Currently residing in Edinburgh with his wife, Nicola, and their two adult children, Professor Allison is renowned internationally for his academic prowess. His involvement dates back to 2014 when he volunteered as the chairperson of the finance, audit, and risk committee. In 2021, he made history as the first lay trustee at the college.

Professor Allison embarked on his academic journey by obtaining a joint honours MA in economics and accounting from the University of Edinburgh. Following this, he joined KPMG, where he qualified as a chartered accountant and honed his auditing skills. His illustrious career path led him to the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Scotland, where he held positions of increasing responsibility, culminating in the role of executive director of education in 1998.
Throughout his career, Professor Allison played a pivotal role in enhancing accounting and audit education on a global scale. His efforts in standardisation and recognition paved the way for the CA qualification’s acceptance worldwide, including in the United States. As a technical advisor and chairperson of the International Accounting Education Standards Board, he significantly influenced the regulation of accountant education across the globe, benefiting millions of aspiring accountants.
Furthermore, Professor Allison’s dedication to teaching and examining led him to a distinguished role as a visiting professor at Robert Gordon University in Aberdeen since 2004, further solidifying his status as a respected academic figure.
