The driver of a road sweeping lorry has been handed a five-year driving ban after being found responsible for the deaths of a couple in a tragic collision in Bellshill. Mohammed Rashid and his wife, Shamim, lost their lives when David Scott failed to apply the brakes in time, causing him to crash into the back of their car. The couple’s BMW 1 series was pushed forward, resulting in a collision with another vehicle. Shamim, aged 66, succumbed to severe head and neck injuries a day after the accident on August 30, 3022, on the A725 Bellshill bypass. Mohammed, aged 70, sustained serious internal injuries and passed away in the hospital two weeks later. The couple, residents of Bellshill and parents of three children, were deeply mourned by their community.
David Scott, 33, residing on Innerleithen Drive, Coltness, appeared before the Hamilton Sheriff Court and admitted to causing death by careless driving. The tragic incident occurred on the busy dual carriageway around 4:20 pm. Witnesses reported that traffic in the area had come to a standstill before the collision. Data retrieved from the scene revealed that Scott did attempt to brake just before colliding with the BMW, but was unable to prevent the crash. Scott’s defence advocate, John Scullion KC, expressed his client’s sincere remorse and extended apologies to the family and friends of the deceased couple. Despite Scott’s clean driving record until the incident, he acknowledged his failure to react promptly and avoid the collision due to a momentary lapse of attention.
In his ruling, Sheriff John Speir not only imposed a five-year driving ban on Scott but also placed him under social work supervision for a year and mandated him to complete 200 hours of unpaid community work. Additionally, Scott was subjected to a six-month electronic tagging order. The court proceedings highlighted the tragic consequences of a lapse in concentration while driving, underscoring the need for vigilance and responsibility on the road.
