Blair Drummond Safari Park could see new lion enclosure built giving ‘greater access to the lions’

Blair Drummond Safari Park in Scotland is set to introduce a new lion enclosure, which will provide visitors with “greater access to the lions.” Stirling Council planners have given conditional approval for the park’s plans to replace the current lion enclosure. The new enclosure will feature a covered viewing area at ground level, aiming to enhance the visitor experience and interaction with the lions.

The safari park currently houses a pride of seven lions, all of which are related to each other. The pride includes two adult females, Karis and Libby, who are sisters. They have offspring fathered by the alpha male Zulu, who tragically passed away from leukaemia in March 2021. Karis is the mother of a boy and two girls – Murray, Isla, and Thistle, born in 2016. Libby gave birth to two female cubs, Hope and Faith, in 2019.

The new lion enclosure will be situated northwest of the current reserve and will have dimensions of 31.95 metres by 10.1 metres. The decision to construct the new enclosure comes after an incident in December 2020 when an escaped Barbary macaque entered the lion enclosure and was killed by the lions in front of park visitors. The new enclosure aims to meet current standards and enhance the safety of the animals and visitors.

Council planners noted that the new lion enclosure aligns with the Local Development Plan policy, supporting developments that complement existing tourist facilities. The larger enclosure will provide a closer viewing experience for the public while ensuring the well-being of the lions. The site, within the long-established tourist facility, is expected to contribute to the local rural economy by attracting more visitors.

The proposed location of the lion enclosure will involve the removal of some trees, while others will be protected and relocated. The design of the enclosure aims to promote greater access to the lions in a safe and sustainable manner. Despite the impact on some trees, measures will be taken to preserve the existing natural environment while enhancing the visitor experience at Blair Drummond Safari Park.

In summary, Blair Drummond Safari Park is making strides to improve its facilities by introducing a new lion enclosure that will offer visitors a unique and up-close experience with the resident lions. The park’s commitment to conservation and enhancing visitor engagement underscores its dedication to wildlife preservation and education.
