Roads teams in South Lanarkshire are gearing up for the winter season as they prepare for potential snow, ice, and low temperatures. The South Lanarkshire Council has 29 gritters, 12 footway tractors, and four loaders on standby for the upcoming months. With a team of around 150 winter staff, they will be monitoring weather forecasts closely to ensure 49% of the road network in South Lanarkshire is gritted when necessary, a percentage higher than the Scottish average.
Access to crucial facilities such as hospitals, emergency services, and schools will be prioritised for gritting, as well as ensuring rural communities have vital access routes cleared. The council has stocked up on 31,400 tonnes of road salt, nearly double the amount used last winter, to combat the challenges that may arise during the winter months. Councillor Robert Brown, the chair of the community and enterprise resources committee, emphasised the importance of being well-prepared for any weather conditions that may occur.
Despite the mild weather currently being experienced, the council is equipped with trained staff and resources to tackle extreme weather conditions effectively. Residents will be kept informed through various channels, including the council’s website detailing winter maintenance policies, gritting routes, and grit bin locations. Social media platforms will provide real-time updates on weather conditions and the movement of gritters.
