Stewartry’s Only Council-Run Swimming Pool Faces Closure Threat
The Castle Douglas swimming pool, the only council-run facility in Stewartry, is potentially on the chopping block as part of a consultation on the local authority’s budget. With nearly 50 options for the public to consider, the closure of this pool is among the proposals. Additionally, several Stewartry schools are at risk, with a suggestion to mothball those with fewer than 25 students.
Councillor Iain Howie from Castle Douglas and Crocketford expressed concern over the potential closure of the swimming pool, highlighting the difficult decision he may face while evaluating budget proposals. The council aims to cut £10 million from its budget annually for the next three years, with 48 potential savings options under consideration. These proposals could generate significant savings, ranging from £5.3 million to £16.524 million by 2027/28.
The consultation aims to gather public opinion on the identified savings options, recognizing the need to adapt to increasing service demands in the rural area amid reduced funding. One option includes upgrading and refurbishing the Castle Douglas facility at a cost exceeding £1 million. However, closure of the swimming pool is being considered as a cost-saving measure that could yield up to £200,000 annually.
In addition to the swimming pool, changes to the school mothballing policy are being discussed, including raising the threshold to 25 pupils, potentially saving £2 million by 2027/28. Other proposed savings options involve reducing services like layby bins and public toilets, as well as introducing parking charges in certain areas. The consultation, available online until December 6, aims to guide the council in setting the 2025/26 budget.
Council leader, Councillor Gail Macgregor, emphasized the financial challenges faced by local authorities and the need to find additional savings in the coming years.
