Dumfries Town Centre Revamp on the Horizon
A new initiative, Better Streets, has been launched in Dumfries town centre with a focus on improving access and road safety. Key areas such as High Street, Shakespeare Street, and George Street are being scrutinised for potential enhancements. The project invites residents and business owners to participate in providing feedback on proposed changes until December 16.
The Better Streets initiative aims to create safer and more convenient streets for pedestrians, cyclists, and wheelchair users. The plans also address concerns regarding delivery accessibility. Ten priority locations have been identified for improvements based on community feedback and the Dynamically Different Dumfries project led by DPAG.
Gilbert West, DPAG’s active travel lead, expressed support for the proposals, highlighting the need for inclusive streets and better infrastructure for active travel. The designs include wider pavements, improved crossings, and segregated spaces for pedestrians and cyclists. Once feedback is gathered, Dumfries and Galloway Council will seek funding for the project.
The proposals, developed in collaboration with SWestrans and DPAG, aim to enhance the town’s streetscape, promote sustainable modes of transport, and ensure accessibility for all residents. Design concepts by transport consultants SYSTRA incorporate national guidelines to reduce conflicts between different road users and improve disabled access.
In addition to street improvements, the plans focus on enhancing public areas with landscaping, seating, and quality paving to create a welcoming environment for visitors. Local residents are encouraged to participate in drop-in events and complete surveys to provide their input on the proposed changes.
