At least 24 people have been killed in a devastating bombing at a railway station in troubled southwestern Pakistan, officials confirm. The attack, which occurred on Saturday, also left over 50 individuals wounded, with some in critical condition. Among the deceased were around a dozen soldiers and six railway employees. The tragic incident took place as nearly 100 passengers were awaiting a train from Quetta to Rawalpindi at the station in Balochistan province. Senior police officer Mohammad Baloch reported that the bomb went off while passengers were present at the station.
The Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), a separatist group, claimed responsibility for the bombing through a statement, attributing it to a suicide bomber targeting troops at the railway station. While authorities believe it was a suicide attack, investigations are still ongoing to confirm the BLA’s involvement in the incident. Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif condemned the bombing, vowing that the perpetrators would face severe consequences for their actions. He affirmed that security forces are resolute in eradicating terrorism in the region.
Visuals from the scene revealed the destruction caused by the explosion, with the platform’s roof structure torn apart and a tea stall demolished amidst scattered luggage. Quetta police official Ayesha Faiz mentioned that some critically injured passengers succumbed to their injuries in hospital. Balochistan, known for its oil and mineral resources, is Pakistan’s largest province but has a sparse population. The region is home to the ethnic Baloch minority, who allege mistreatment and exploitation by the central government.
Apart from separatist outfits like the BLA, Islamic militant groups also operate in Balochistan. The BLA has been engaged in a prolonged insurgency seeking independence from Islamabad, frequently targeting security forces and foreign nationals. Notably, the group has aimed assaults at Chinese citizens working on major infrastructure projects in Pakistan under Beijing’s Belt and Road Initiative. The recent railway station bombing follows a previous BLA-claimed suicide attack targeting Chinese nationals outside Karachi airport, resulting in fatalities.
