An 84-year-old pensioner, Catherine Nicoll, has been banned from driving for 16 months after driving her Honda Jazz down the wrong way on a busy dual carriageway in Perthshire, Scotland. Nicoll, from Pitlochry, was fined £400 at Perth Sheriff Court and ordered to re-sit the extended driving test before being allowed back on the road.
The incident occurred on the A9 Perth to Inverness trunk road near Ballinluig on 1st June of this year. Nicoll drove northbound against the flow of traffic in the fast lane of the southbound carriageway, causing another driver to swerve to avoid a head-on collision. The court heard that she ignored warning signs indicating she was travelling in the wrong direction.
Nicoll was identified as the driver of the Jazz through dashcam footage provided by a witness who narrowly avoided a collision by swerving into another lane. Despite admitting to the mistake, Nicoll told officers that she was unaware of how she ended up driving in the wrong direction and immediately turned around at the first lay-by.
In her defense, Nicoll’s solicitor stated that she works three days a week, drives 7,000 miles annually, and had been driving without incident for over 50 years. Sheriff Jennifer Bain KC acknowledged Nicoll’s quick actions to rectify her mistake but emphasized the potentially catastrophic consequences of her actions.
The sheriff highlighted the “frightful experience” Nicoll caused for the other driver and acknowledged her long history of driving without issues. Nicoll expressed remorse for her mistake and passed an eyesight test following the incident.
