Influencers Organise Weight Loss Injection Meet-up in Glasgow Despite Nurse’s Death

Social media influencers are set to host a party in Glasgow celebrating a weight loss jab, just a few miles away from where a nurse passed away after taking the same medication. The event, called the Mounjaro Meetup, is scheduled to happen in Glasgow, with various popular users of the drug promoting the gathering online. Mounjaro, a brand name for tirzepatide recently approved by the NHS, is commonly purchased from online pharmacies, sparking calls for stricter regulations. Susan McGowan, a nurse from Airdrie, tragically died on September 4 after receiving two low-dose injections of Mounjaro over a two-week period, marking the first official fatality linked to the drug in the UK. Despite seeking medical advice before using the medication, Susan, who had worked at Monklands Hospital for over three decades, was described as healthy with no other medications but wanted to manage her weight.

Shortly after Susan’s death was publicized, online influencers began planning a celebration in a Glasgow pub to rejoice in the drug’s benefits. A video posted online by influencer Heather, who has almost 8,000 followers documenting her weight loss journey, advertised the event encouraging like-minded individuals to attend. The meetup, organised by another influencer named Ben with close to 10,000 followers, will be held in a pub in Glasgow’s west end, less than 20 miles from Susan’s hometown in Airdrie where she had lost her life. The drug has garnered significant attention on platforms like TikTok and Instagram with numerous accounts dedicated solely to showcasing progress on the medication and providing advice to interested individuals.

Currently, the drug can be obtained online by filling out a form, answering questions, and submitting photos of oneself, a process experts believe should require in-person medical consultation to ensure safety. Director of the Obesity Health Alliance, Katharine Jenner, emphasized the need for robust safety measures following Susan’s tragic outcome. The manufacturers of Mounjaro, Lilly, distanced themselves from the event, confirming no affiliation with the organisers and asserting their commitment to patient safety through rigorous assessment of the drug’s risks and benefits.

In summary, despite the tragic loss of a nurse linked to the weight loss jab Mounjaro, influencers are proceeding with a celebratory event in Glasgow. This highlights the complex interplay between social media promotion and medication safety, prompting calls for increased regulation and caution in the use of such drugs to prevent further incidents.
