Perth Museum in Scotland is showcasing its latest exhibition, Waters Rising, where visitors are encouraged to share their experiences with flooding. The exhibition explores stories and objects related to flooding locally in Perth and Kinross, as well as globally. Opening on November 8 and running until March 16, 2025, the exhibition introduces a ‘pay what you choose’ system for admission. Reflecting on the impact of flooding and extreme weather events, the exhibition features photos, films, written memories, oral histories, and artefacts such as an Egyptian sarcophagus with Nile flood damage and rare illuminated manuscripts. Curator Niamh Finlay describes Waters Rising as an exploration of flooding as a concept culturally, physically, and emotionally, offering a view of the climate crisis through the lens of flooding. The exhibition also delves into global flood myths and their implications, alongside a focus on local flooding in Perth and Kinross.
With a community-driven approach, Waters Rising invites residents to contribute their flood experiences and engage with the exhibition. Notably, the display includes photographs ranging from 1901 to October 2023, depicting impactful flooding events in the region. The exhibition sheds light on climate activism and anxiety surrounding climate issues. By providing a platform for diverse perspectives on flooding, Waters Rising offers a space for dialogue on the local and global implications of these events. Notable omissions in the exhibition include memories of floodgate incidents in Perth, sparking further discussions on flood management in the area. Additionally, an interactive river track monitor highlights the importance of monitoring river levels for flood preparedness.
Perth and Kinross has a history of flooding incidents affecting various areas, with the exhibition drawing parallels between local events and global occurrences. Since its opening earlier this year, Perth Museum has seen significant visitor numbers, with free admission to its permanent galleries and the iconic Stone of Destiny.
